Finger Fractures In Young Children

A finger fracture is a crack or break in one or more of the bones of a finger. The break may be just a bend or small crack in the bone or the bone may be shattered, or broken into pieces. Some fractures break through the skin while others remain contained. Finger fractures in young children are challenging because they typically do not have the vocabulary or ability to fully describe what happened or what they are feeling.

We see an increasing number of Little League elbow injuries in young baseball players in our office. Many heal with a combination of rehabilitation and rest while others require surgery.

The school year has begun, bringing with it the excitement of another year of learning and the intensity and anticipation of athletic competition! Many young athletes have prepared for this year by honing their skills, training to defend their titles or seeking revenge for prior defeats.   Unfortunately, with such high level competition and preparation injuries often occur.  Even with protective gear and rule changes to protect the athletes, bones are broken, ligaments get torn and tendons and muscles become inflamed.
